Well it has begun. I was contacted by the landlord of the apartment that I rent in Weimar and he wanted to know when I was coming this year. So I had to make an early decision. I will be in Weimar from 28 June till 23 July. This sort of sets the pace for the rest of the summer. I will fly to Berlin and stay there 7 nights and then go to Weimar. After that I will see. But what I do know is that going down to Rome and then to Sicily with Jackie and Suzie is definitely out - although they do not know it yet.
So I guess we are looking at Dresden, Praha, Munchen, possibly Innsbrucke and Wein. I think I can use my points and get a very good deal at the Praha Hilton so that is good. I don't know if I will fly over 1st class or not but even though the plan has started I have plenty of time. I am looking forward to Weimar though now that the plan has been made. I have thought about eating at the Trattoria and drinking at Schwarzberger Hof and running in Park-an-Ilm. All things I enjoy a great deal. I have also been thinloing that I need to be more diligent and exact in my documenting my life there. I need to take more and better photos and to write more about what I am doing and thinking. The thing with this blog is that I do write in my journal every day when I am in Europe so sometimes this feels redundant. Also, in my journals I write in German and it is a little annoying to switch to English when I am in "German mode".

Europe 2015
I normally do not write at this time of the year, I currently feel the need to stay in US for the winter holidays so there is no travel news. But lately I can not stop myself from thinking about being in Germany and planning to go there. My next possibility is a week at the beginning of April and then of course the summer.
I want to be in Weimar for at least 3 weeks if not 4. I also want to fly to Berlin and home from Vienna as always. So the question is the, about 2 weeks I would have "free". Maybe Dresden, maybe Prague, maybe some other small city in Czech Republic. My friends want me to meet them on the Amalfi coast in Italy. I would love to do that but the timing is terrible. They would not be there until after 4 July. So I would be in Europe for about 2 weeks before they arrive. Then I would have to make a 2 day trip up to Weimar for the end of July and I do not think that works for me.
Beginning the summer in Paris and then working my way up to Weimar over a 10 day span is also a possibility but then I would not be able to fly home from Wien. Of course where I go in April will also come into play. If I can get to Paris then I do not need to think about going there in the summer. If I go to Munchen then I do not need to think about going there in the summer. Maybe I should go to Wien in April? Then I can go west from Weimar in the summer. Who knows?????

Europe 2015
Well I have been home since 13 August but have not written anything. I thoroughly enjoyed Europe this summer. Going to familiar places becomes increasingly important to me and yet gonig to new places is still fun. My "old" places were flying into Berlin, where I have been 12 times and flying home from Vienna, where I have also been 12 times. Of course I was at the apartment in Weimar for 3 weeks for the 5th summer.
But I also went to Braunschweig, Budapest and Bratslava, all of which were "new" places. It was fun going to new places and yet comforting to go to familiar places. I like both but I can feel myself wanting the familiar more and more.
My traveling friends Susie and Jackie want to meet on the Amalfi Coast next summer. This could work for me and meeting the 2 of them for 8/10 days in the summer is always, and has always been a fun time. I think that we would spend a few days in Milan and then go to Sorrento for a few more. I would have to travel for about 2 weeks before meeting them and then go to beliebte Weimar after. That's OK. The good time is worth it. And I would like to visit a different part of Italy. I would also have the oppertunity to visit the south of France before meeting them in Italy.
But everything in in the talking stage now. At least they have informed me now so we have plenty of time to get this planned to everyone's advantage.
I love to travel and I love to plan to travel.

Vienna Summer 2014
I have been unable to post until now because this new chromebook had me logged in as the work me and I could not get to this page until now. Unfortunately this is my last day in Vienna and for that mater Europe for the summer. I return to the States tomorrow!
Vienna has been wonderful as ever. The Konig von Ungarn Hotel is one of the best hotels I stay at anywhere. I did not have too much to do since this was my 12th trip here, but I did learn some new things. The Kunst Historische Museum has a new installation that is fabulous! They put in part of the Schatz Kammer since last summer and have done something very interesting. Many Schatz Kammers, ie Dresden, Munich, have table pieces, made from gold, that do something. In the past all you could do was read the description of what the object did. Fort example, ride around the table and then shoot an "arrow"at someone. But now they have installed touch pad computers on the benches and you can look at video of the machines in the room doing whatever it is they do!! I found this fascinating. I have seen these objects before and to actually see them in action was wonderful. The Leopold Museum, which holds all the Schieles and a good number of Klimts, has been reorganized as well, although nothing as great as the other.
I also started going to Il tempo this year. It is on a side street off the street from the graben leading to Michaelertor. It is right next to the Levant restaurant. This place is great after dinner for a drink and a dessert. I enjoy the chocolate mousse and a 1/4 l of red.

Bratislava, Slovakia August 2014
I have spent 2 nights in Bratislava with one to go before I head for Vienna. It has been interesting as these little cities always are. I am staying at Marroll's Boutique Hotel. It is pretty wonderful. My room is very nice and the public rooms are also very nice. We are in a quiet street and are only a 5 minute walk to the pedestrian zone. The breakfast is a standard European hotel breakfast and is included in the room price - which is very reasonable. The staff here could not be nicer or friendlier and the internet access is free!
There is not much to do in this city. There are some historic sites, a city museum and a castle up on the hill. Really if you are just interested in the sites this could be a day trip from Vienna, which is less than an hour away. There are lots of tourists, poorly dressed as usual, on walking tours and there are lots of places to eat, drink and hang out. Everywhere I have gone the people have been very helpful and nice. The food is basic and good. The local beer is no good. Drink something else. I did go to the tourist office yesterday and sign up for their walking tour. I had to buy a tourist card to go but it also would allow me to use all the public transportation for 2 days. But I didn't because you can walk everywhere.

Budapest, Hungary - August 1, 2014
I arrived in Budapest by train from Munich on Wednesday. It was a long train ride - over 7 hours- but I didn't have to change trains at all. I got money from the atm at the train station and then took a cab to the hotel. The ride is a standard fee that depends on where you are going. Mine was 20 euro.
I am staying at the Kempinski Hotel and let me say that of all the 5 star hotels I have stayed in, this one is the best. It is just gorgeous, the room is great and the service could not be any better. For the room and breakfast everyday, which is great, I am paying $200 a night. Not too bad at all considering that I have paid more for one night in a 3 star hotel in Manhattan and got nothing.
Budapest is a good city. I am liking it more each day. Like anywhere else you go that you are not familiar with it takes time to get to know the place a little. I have been disappointed with the evening meals that I have had so far. The first night I ate in a restaurant that the barman recommended to me in the pedestrian zone by the Basilica. I don't remember the name right now but the food was OK and the prices were way too high. But down the street was a nice outdoor bar that had the football game on and so I had a few beers and one of their version of an obstler.
The second day I walked all the way up Andrassy Utca to the National Galley to see the art. It was a nice walk and the museum is worth it. They have 2 Giorgiones! On the way there I passed an Italian at the beginning of Andrassy and went back for dinner. I had the usual caprese salad and then taglitelli will shrimps and tomatos. The salad was good but the pasta was a little bland and I could only get 0.125l of a glass of wine! The service was marginal at best. It is one of those places where the owner sits out front and has one friend after another come and take up his time. And the waiters just putter around. So if you don't know them and you don't speak Italian don't go there.
Today I went up to the castle hill on the bus. I walked around and took some pictures and had a lemonade. It was super hot and humid and I was soaked. So after stopping at the Hard Rock to buy a glass, I came to the hotel and am now writing this poolside!

Munich July 27, 2014
I arrived in Munich on Friday 25 July. It was warm and sunny and I checked into the Munich Hilton City. I have never stayed in this end of the city. All the other times I was here I stayed in the Hauptbahnhof area. I am now over the Isar on Rossenheim Strasse. It takes about 10 minutes to walk tot he Isar Tor and then the city center is right there.
I have been to the Alte Pinikotek and the Egyptian museum. The Alte is one of the best art collections in Europe. It is well laid out and has a collection you can view over and over. Of course one of the highlights is the coffee shop. They have the BEST cakes. I have never gone to this museum without going in for a coffee and a piece of cake.
The Egyptian Museum was always in part of the Rezidence, but no longer is. They have built a new building for it on the block behind the Alte. It looks like a car park buiding and the stairs in the front resemble a drive way. But it is the place and what a place it is. I have never seen any place laid out like this is. You receive an i-pad-like device to wear around your neck. It shows where you are and a lay-out of the room you are in. Then you touch the object you want to learn about and it shows a picture and tells you about it! It really is unbelievable. I was there about 90 minutes.
I have eaten in 2 new places. The first is an Italian on Hildgarde Strasse. Very good and reasonable prices. I had the spaghetti Alio and the caprese salad. It is not touristy at all but you should go there during the day to find it and make a reservation while you are there. The street is behind the Hofbrau House.
The second place is called Klinglwirt and is on Balanstrasse. You go on Rossenheim Strasse past the Hilton going away from the river and make a right onto this street. I had Linz schnitzel with potato and cucumber salad and a side salad. Very basic, very good German food. If you happen to be in this area it is definitely worth a stop.

Munchen 2014
Today is Saturday the 26th and I arrived in Munchen yesterday. I am staying at the Hilton City Hotel and it is like every other Hilton. I have never stayed in this end of Munich before now. I like it so far. I did buy a ten trip strip. It cost 5 cents less than buying the trips individually and the 4 day pass cost much more than I would ever have used.
I do not know if I have ever said this here before but I will say it now. When you are in Munchen and you visit the Alte Pinoteck you absolutely must go to the coffee shop and have a piece of cake and a cp of coffee. The cake there is to die for. I had dinner at a restaurant called tavernetta in Hidegard strasse. Very good basic Italien food and the service was friendly and efficient. It did not have a lot of tourists and if you go there do not tell people about it.

Rudolstadt 15 July 2014
I ventured out of Weimar today to visit Rudolstadt. I think this is the only small Stadt in Thuringia that I have not yet visited. It was a nice day out. I bought a Thuringian Card for 22 e and that meant I could go any where for the day. It is more expensive than a Hopper but this place is too far for that deal. Anyway, I had to change trains in Jena-Groshwitz and the whole trip took less than an hour. From the train station the signs were very clear to get to the Altstadt. I found the tourist Info and they gave me a map and pointed me in the direction of the Heidecksburg Palace - the big draw of this small city.
I stopped for a cup of coffee and pancakes with apple sauce first and then walked up there. Not for the faint of heart. This palace is another example of a ruling family of a small territory that build a palace bigger than the main city. For 8.50e I got a guided tour and access to everything they have there. I enjoyed the tour but be warned it is only in German. After I walked back down to the main square and had a bowl of spicy potato soup and 2 beers for 10e. Then I came home.

I got home about 16:30 and showered etc. Then I walked up the street to Schwarzburg Hof for dinner and a few beers. I did it all for 20e. Braunschweig, Germany 2014
My 4 nights in Braunschweig were worth it. I stayed at the Hotel Ritter St. George on Alte Knochenhauerstrasse. I liked the hotel. I had a large room in the back, I had to go through the courtyard tp get there. It was very large and very quiet. The people there were very nice and helpful. The breakfast was basic German - cold cuts, bread, yogurt, cereal, juice and coffee.
In Braunscheig you have to walk around a little to appreciate it. There are some very lovely spots and streets. The Herzog Anton-Ulrich art collection is currently housed in the castle in the Burgplatz. The collection is well worth seeing with the Vermeer and the Giorgione being the high points. The cathedral is also well worth a visit. The wall paintings from the middle ages that cover the walls and the ceiling are spectacular. The Residenze is a reconstruction but has some nice period rooms with original furniture and a good audio guide.
From Braunschweig I was able to visit Hannover, Celle and the Marianburg. The Marianburg gives a very thorough and interesting tour on the royal family of Hannover but it is in German and if you need an audio guide in English you need a picture ID. I was with a friend who does not speak German and he didn't enjoy it as much as I. You have to take a cab to and from the castle on week days.
Celle has a Stadtschloss that has an OK exhibit, but the town itself is beautiful. I wish I had gone earlier in the day so that I had more time to just walk around the city. It is easy to get there and you just walk straight down the street in front of the train station to get to the center of town. Hannover is a large modern city with a lot to look at. Again, it would have been nice to just spend the day walking around. There are a few sights but they are just OK.
If you are in this area and are going to use the trains ti travel between these cities, but a Neidersachische day card. For 2 people it is 26 euro and you can use it all day long!

Braunschweig, 2014
Well my week in Berlin is over. I stayed at the Hilton and enjoyed myself as always. I got to the Gemalde Gallery, The Neues Museum, the Altes Museum and the Egyptian collection. Ernest and I went on a river cruise up the Spree and we also went to the top of the Reichstag. If you want to do that, remember that it is FREE. DO NOT pay for a reservation on line. You just go down there the day before you want to go and make a reservation. Ask one of the workers where to go and they will help you
I ate at a new place this year. Of course I did it before Ernest arrived on Thursday because he would have hated it. It is a restaurant call ed Le Petite Felix. It was very nice and the service was great. It was expensive but that is what vacations are for.
I have arrived today in Braunschweig. I am staying at the Saint George Ritter Hotel. My roomis very large and the hotel seems to be well located. We will find a place to eat tonight and then tomorrow we begin the purpose of our visit. Going to exhibits related to the 400th anniversary of the ascension of the house of Hannover on the English throne. We will see because the internet connection in my room is terrible

Berlin 2014
Well it has finally arrived - Germany 2014! I flew over on Sunday night. First class IS everything it is cracked up to be. The food was great. The booze was included. I actually slept a good deal of the time. This may have to become a regular feature on the way over. It is a lot of money but so what? I can't hold on to it all.
Unfortunately, the Berlin Hilton is not what it was. It has become a tourist hotel with tour guides and schedules in the lobby and one bus after another of ill-dressed American tourists. Also, I booked my room two months in advance and paid in advance and did not get the room I booked. Instead I got told "We're sorry but the hotel is completely booked." So now I have a room with two single beds in it. I think this is my seventh and last stay at this place.
Today I went the Deutsches Historisches Museem in the Zeughaus. Wonderful as ever. I love that two of the portraits of Elizabeth Charlotte von derPfalz are here. Her niece was the queen of Prussia and she sent them to her. Tonight I ate a Le Petit Felix. A French restaurant that I read about on tripAdvisor. It was very good and the service was great. The food prices themself were not too bad, 12 e for baked goat cheese and greens and 22e for Coq au Vin. But the martini, the 2 glasses of red and the coffee were more than the food. All told it cost me 70e - a lot.

Well, tomorrow is the big day. I leave for Europe 2014. I think I am ready. I have the clothes ready and I have my passport and my Europe wallet. With I must add, 200e. I called the airline today and confirmed all the flights. The car comes at 4:15 pm and the flight is at 7:00pm. I can not wait to be in that 1st class seat. So I am supposed to arrive in Berlin 11:30am German time on Monday morning.
I went and saw my brother and mother this afternoon and I spoke with Zack on the phone. So I guess that is it. I am ready for another summer in Germany. Ich kann nicht mehr warten. Lassen uns jetzt gehen!

Europe Summer 2014
As I wrote in the last post my plans are completed and booked. I am now just waiting to go and it gets harder every day. I have treated myself to a first class plane ticket this summer and am actually looking forward to the plane ride over.
One new thing since the last post, once I am in Braunschweig I will be going to the exhibit - "Weg zu der Krone" in Marienberg castle. It is an exhibition that is part of the anniversary celebrations of the 300th year since the house of Hanover took the British throne. I will also be going to Hannover city itself to see the special exhibits there. I'm looking forward to it.

Germany Summer 2014
Well my plans are confirmed and I am finalized. I will be in berlin for a week and then in Braunschweig for 4 nights. Then I will be in beliebte Weimar for 3 weeks. Then 5 nights in Munchen. Then I am going somewhere I have not been in 20 years - Budapest, Hungary. I have no memory of my time there but I do know that I was there with my friend Sal. After I am going to Bratislava for 3 nights and then, of course, I will be in Vienna for 7 nights before I go home.
When I get to these places I will post more about the hotels and the restaurants ant the sites that I have visited

Europe Summer 2014
Well, I've hit a snag in my summer '14 plans! The apartment I wanted to rent in Regensburg is apparently schoen rented. So now I must find an alternate plan B. I don't really know what to do. I don't want to spend a stupid amount of money on a small apartment and I can't find anywhere else to go. Maybe I should just stay in Regensburg for 3 or 4 nights this year. Maybe I should head west this year. I could go to Heidelberg and Stuttgart und dann vielicht Paris - aber ich Weiss nicht.

germany Summer '14
The only decision I have made about this summer is that my apartment in Weimar is rented for 3 weeks in July. I still plan on leaving for Germany at the end of June and of course I will fly into Berlin. I believe that this year I will upgrade my ticket since once again I will not have a Spring Break so the money I would have spent then I can spend in the summer.
But anyway, after 7 nights in Berlin I will go to Braunschweig for 4 nights, the to Weimar. After that I do believe I will rent a place in Regensburg for 10 nights. The reason is that I want to stay until at least August 18 and I do not want to travel around that much. So after 10 nights in Regensburg I will go to 4 nights in Budapest, 3nights in Bratislava and then 7 nights in Vienna.
My Jackie problem is solved.

Europe Summer 2014!
Well , I have made the first moves toward Summer '14. I have rented my apartment in Weimar for 3 weeks in July. Knowing that I have done that always makes me happy. I am going to leave for Germany on, probably, the 23nd of June. I will have 11 days before Weimar. So, of course I will fly into Berlin and stay there at least 6, if not 7 nights. Then I am not sure. I could go to Dresden for 4 nights or I could go to Braunschweig for 4 nights. I should go to Braunschweig because I have never been there and I would love to visit the Herzog Anton Museem. Also, I have been to Dresden 4 times Althought it is a place that I can visit over and over.
The real question is what to do after Weimar. As I have mentioned before, Bamberg is no longer option B. So I was thinking I could rent a place in Regensburg. It has the same feeling as Bamberg and there are places to rent. After that I think I want to go to Eastern Europe again. I have been thinking first Cresky Krumlov in the Czech Republic, since I liked being there last Summer, then Budapest for 4 days and then Bratislava for 3 days. Of course after I would end up in Vienna at my Konig von Ungarn hotel for a week.
